This course offers students a hands-on approach to computer networking. The students are given practical tasks from the area of computer networks which they have to solve in a small team. The course aims to familiarize the students with practical issues of computer network setup, configuration, operation and maintenance.

This course requires fair overall knowledge of networking protocols. The exercises will be done using the Linux operating system and Cisco routers.

On March 27th, at 2pm, there will be an organizational meeting, in the networking lab at floor -1. An introduction to the lab course, including a tour of the actual lab will be given.

===Lab teams===
The students will conduct the practical course in small teams. A team normally consist of 2 students. If you miss a team member, you can come to the introductionary meeting look for a team mate there.

===Weekly exercises and written reports===
The course consists of weekly exercises related to computer networks. Each team is expected to complete those exercises and compile a short written report every week.

==Passing requirements==
* Complete all the labs and submit the lab report on time. For a report to be acceptable, a reasonably complete answer to each question is expected.
* Participate in a final personal-meeting/feedback-round with Professor.

==Lab Slots==

Delay Tolerant Networks are a family of networks characterized by high and unpredictable node mobility. Examples can be a network formed by smartphones in your pockets, network of sensors (e.g. on cars on an highway), networks of "smart" domestic appliances, "smartdust", etc and a combination thereof.

The fact that the network topology is potentially highly dynamic introduces a number of relevant conditions:
* routing path between two endpoints changes frequently (and significantly) over time, making uneffective the classic routing protocol used e.g. in the Internet;
* the network can be disconnected: there can be two or more network partitions without connecting links, for a certain period of time. It might thus be impossible for to directly reach a destination;

Although the aforementioned elements significantly reduces the performances when compared to fixed networks, DTNs can be useful in situations where the normal infrastructure is not available (e.g. in the aftermath of an emergency, in rural areas, in case of infrastructure malfunctioning), when we would prefer to keep an information local or when the infrastructure can not be trusted.

DTN have been a research topic for several years and many protocols have been proposed. We think there is scope for further improvement and for use in real world cases. Information Centric Networking, a proposal that shift the paradigm from data location to data itself, embedding in the communication security, possibility to replicate content, better routing, could be a key element of the picture. IoT, Emergencies, Mobile social networks in proximity, pervasive computing, VANETS are only some of the fields that relate to dtn: you can come up with any other idea where dtn can be useful!

This course covers selected topics on the up-to-date Internet technologies and research. Each student takes a topic, does a presentation and writes a report on it. But the authorization is a big concern in such extreme scenarios. Authorization on a person-by-person basis is obviously not (energy, computation, and networkload) efficient. In another word, he assumes that everyone who wants to join the group should have the knowledge of that information. The new network architecture provides better support for a (topic-based) pub/sub system than the existing IP-based solutions. Content Centric Networking (CCN) is a new ambitious proposal to replace the IP protocol. A better and faster content distribution, improved privacy, integrated cryptography and easy P2P communication are among the key elements of this architecture. As a part of the seminar you have to present your topic to an audience of students and other interested people. You have 25 minutes to present your topic followed by 10 minutes of discussion. You must keep within the time limit of 35 minutes. Please send the slides to your topic advisor as soon possible though, so you have time to include any feedback you got.

You can chose on your own whether you want to prepare the presentation or write the report first. We recommend that you have a rough draft of the presentation as a basis to discuss your approach of the topic with your advisor before writing a lot of text. Content Centric Networking (CCN) is a new ambitious proposal to replace the IP protocol. A better and faster content distribution, improved privacy, integrated cryptography and easy P2P communication are among the key elements of this architecture. On the other hand problems like efficiency and scalability of the name-based routing, support of existing application and new ones and the possibility to actually deploy this technology are still open and actively discussed, making CCN one of the most active research field in networking.

By choosing this topic you will gain a general knowledge of the architecture proposed by the NDN researchers and insight into one of the problems like routing or security, or solutions (i.e. applications on top of NDN).

The workflow of the seminar is as follows.

Each student picks a topic to work on. '''You can pick a topic and start working at any time.''' Just approach the topic advisor and he will give you initial information and a time frame for the topic. Alternatively you can select a topic at the first session of a semester.

For each topic a supervising tutor is available who is familiar with the topic. He is your contact person for questions and problems regarding the topic. The tutor supports you as much as ''you'' want, so don't hesitate to approach him for general advice or with any questions you might have. You must have at least one face-to-face meeting to discuss your outline and initial thoughts. It is recommended that you schedule a first meeting right when you select the topic you want to work on.

* You chose the direction of your elaboration.

As a part of the seminar you have to present your topic to an audience of students and other interested people. Your presentation should give the audience a general idea of the topic and highlight interesting issues and problems. Try to explain the motivation behind your topic and the problems that are addressed as well as the solutions and open questions. You have 25 minutes to present your topic followed by 10 minutes of discussion. You must keep within the time limit of 35 minutes. The deadline for the slides you prepare for the presentation is one week before the actual presentation. Please send the slides to your topic advisor as soon possible though, so you have time to include any feedback you got.

You can chose on your own whether you want to prepare the presentation or write the report first. We recommend that you have a rough draft of the presentation as a basis to discuss your approach of the topic with your advisor before writing a lot of text. It is easier to exchange a couple of slides than a couple pages in the report.

Some hints you should keep in mind when preparing the presentation:
* 20 minutes are too short to present a topic fully.
* Limit the introduction of basics (5 min.).
* Focus on the interesting parts of the topic.
* It is alright to focus just on one certain important aspect.
* Make sure to ﬁnish in time!

Suggestions for preparing the slides:

* Get your audiences to quickly understand the idea of the presentation
* Figures, tables and animations are better than wordy sentences
