Course Overview

The purpose of this seminar is to discuss some advanced concepts in mobile communication. Each week we will select several fancy papers from some top tier conferences/journals. Students are supposed to read the papers ahead of time and give your review of each paper. The aim of the course is to help the early stage MS/PhD students to develop the required skills of research as well as to get your hand wet on the cut-edge work on mobile communications.

Grading Policy

The grad consists of four parts

  • Homework
  • Attendance, participation, and enthusiasm
  • Final presentation
  • Final report

Final Presentation

  • Paper list will be provided before 1st Jun
  • Select a paper in the list before 8th Jun
  • Deadline of submitting slides: 26th Jun
  • Duration: 25-30 minute presentation + 10 minute discussion Tips for preparing slides
    • 15-20 pages, BSc/MSc. thesis format
    • Correct citation of others’ work (figure, sentence, argument, idea, ...)
    • Get your audiences to quickly understand the idea of the paper
    • Animations, figures and tables are better than wordy sentences
    • Use example to explain complicated algorithms
      • Short sentences
      • Avoid complicated equations
      • Summary of the paper: thinking/justification of the paper in your own words (Bonus)

Final Report

  • Deadline: 30th Sept
  • Objective
    • review the paper and investigate this research field
  • Format
    • Title
    • Abstract: a broad overview of the report, end with a short statement of the major results of your investigation
    • Introduction: expands the abstract, get specific about your investigation
    • Related work: unlikely invented something completely new
    • Overview of the paper: what’s important idea of the paper? Bring your reader to the method
    • Main results of the paper
    • Discussion of the paper: give your opinion on the paper
    • Future thoughts along the direction

Requirements

  • Each participant is required to read the selected paper before the seminar and prepare the review of the paper, which should include the following parts:
    • Summary of the paper
    • pros AND cons of the paper (your conclusion)
    • NOTE!! Every participant should provide the paper review BEFORE the seminar (23:59 Wednesday). => the review form is available at [Paper_Review_Form_ATCN_WS201112.doc]
  • During the seminar, one is chosen for giving the overview of the paper. And the list of pros and cons is discussed by all the participant.
  • In the end of the semester, everyone is requested to pick a topic (about 4 papers) and prepare:
    • presentation (each for ~20 minutes, plus ~10 minutes discussions)
